Annotation: After three hundred years in the world, the vampire Risika begins to contemplate her life as, Rachel Weatere, the person she was before becoming a vampire. She begins a cat and mouse game with one of her mentors, Aubrey, that will bring her to a showdown that may end her existence.
Defence of Nomination:
Amelia Atwater-Rhoades, wrote this novel when she was fourteen years old. The work is clear and insightful for a girl of her age. The novel seems to borrow a variety of plot conventions from others in the genre. It appears loose and repetitive at times as well. The bright spots are the use of imagery and language contributing thick mood that she creates.
Ultimately The author does a good job of mixing YA topics. There are elements of horror, Coming of age and historical fiction. I will admit that this is not the best novel I have read so far but, the fact that she is 13 and will inspire YA readers .
